Our Natural Woods

3-dimensional textured cherry3-dimensional textured cherry is best seen in person. The depth of the 3-D is highlighted when a deep oil and polyacrylic finish is applied. Most often, these pieces are used to highlight small, framed areas such as doors, drawers, and other smaller surfaces. Unsuitable for most table tops.
Spalted cherry is one of Custom Furniture Creations favorite woods. Technically, this isn't spalting, as spalting is a type of fungus that has invaded the wood and then is stabilized after drying. This is actually a natural resin that appears in some cherry boards and is not fungus. We just call is "spalted" cherry because it looks similar and it's easier to say. This wood is often used in figured table tops and sometimes as door frames.Spalted Cherry
Walnut with heart and sap woodWe love to discover large boards like this figured walnut. The dark area is the heart wood where a branch left the main trunk. The light areas is the sap wood. Many woodworkers and almost all factories cut out the sap wood. Not us ! We have a technique for working with it that keeps it stable and allow it to showcase the front of a cabinet, a natural small table top, or a drawer front. This board is almost 24" wide and 72" long.
Rarely, are large apple trees discovered that can be milled for wood that is suitable for furniture. However, many of the older farms in our area have older wild apple trees that sometimes fall and then that's when we salvage the logs. Very difficult to dry this type of wood, but the result is worth the extra effort. Jewelry boxes, accent trim and other smaller areas are suitable for this wood. Rare textured apple
Cathedral cherryCathedral cherry is most often used by Custom Furniture Creations on stunning table tops. Factories will most often consider this texture un-desirable in cherry and will either discard the board or apply a heavy stain to disguise this beautiful texture. What a shame !
This wide board (24") cherry is full of character. It would be mostly unsuitable for large table tops, but would accent a desk top, door front, or bench. Difficult to work with (Bad for us) but the results are stunning (Good for the owner of one our creations!)Knotted figured cherry
WalnutThis is just walnut with some natural texture. Many woodworkers would consider this an exciting piece, but we're used to much more figuring. This piece would be suitable for nearly anything.
Sycamore is a wood that is not so often used for furniture building because it requires extremely sharp tools to prevent fraying when cutting. However, our tools are sharp and so we are able to use it for door frames, drawers, and other parts of furniture where it won't be the highlight of the piece. This wood is very plentiful in this area and custom Furniture Creations is anxious to work more with it. VERY suitable for butcher block counters and stand alone harvest tables.Textured Sycamore with some cathedraling
Plain maple is most often used by Custom Furniture Creations for legs, pins, butcher block, and any other application where strength is a major requirement. Can also be very stunning when contrasted next to walnut as in some our butcher block creations.
3-dimensional figured walnut like this is rarely found in large pieces. It is most suitable for inlays, drawer fronts, doors, or any other small to medium size areas where the stunning 3-D effect can be appreciated. It is truly breathtaking!3-dimensional walnut
